Affordable Rehab Centers

one-on-one drug addiction counseling sessionFor many people, finding an affordable addiction treatment center is a priority. This type of treatment may be offered through certain low-cost programs, for example, or at centers that provide sliding scale payment options. Either choice will be less expensive than most standard rehab centers.

Affordable drug and alcohol rehabs are available throughout the United States. Despite the lower costs, these treatment facilities provide a wide array of services. However, these programs may be tailored to specific populations, have waiting lists for treatment, and, sometimes, have a different standard of care than traditional rehabs.

If an inexpensive rehab has a long waiting list, it may be worth the cost to enter a more traditionally priced treatment program more quickly, especially if working out a payment plan is possible. Timely care, as well as the quality of the care received, may be worth the additional cost. Ultimately, the best option is to receive some type of treatment rather than no treatment at all.

Different Kinds of Affordable Treatment

The types of programs listed below often offer treatment at a reduced cost.

  • State- or county-funded programs. This type of program receives subsidies from the state or county to provide low-cost, effective treatment for substance use disorders.
  • Religious organizations. Some religious groups provide substance abuse treatment, as well as links or referrals to affordable rehab centers. In some cases, they can provide financial assistance to receive treatment.
  • Private organizations. Some private groups can also provide financial assistance or further information on inexpensive rehab centers.
  • Nonprofit organizations. Most nonprofit organizations receive funding from county, state, federal or private sources, and can provide treatment at a reduced cost.

Many of these facilities will work with patients to provide financial assistance to cover some or all of the cost of treatment. Some facilities can also provide treatment on a sliding scale basis, with treatment costs being dependent on the income of individual patients. Many facilities will allow patients to work out a payment plan, so that the cost of treatment can be paid off slowly over a set period of time.
If the facility accepts insurance, it may cover a large portion of the cost.
These programs may also accept private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, Tricare, and plans offered through the Affordable Care Act. If the facility accepts insurance, it may cover a large portion of the cost.

Where to Find Them

Learning about and finding affordable drug and alcohol rehabs can be a daunting task, but resources are available to make it easier. Some of these options include:

  • SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides a website that allows people to locate and learn more about low-cost treatment facilities, organized by area.
  • State mental health and substance use agencies. The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors website offers many links to various federal and state agencies and provides access to various other agencies that can help individuals find affordable treatment.
  • Charity organizations. Checking out websites or calling various charitable organizations can be a good place to obtain more information about services or financial assistance.
    • The Salvation Army prioritizes addiction as a health concern and offers treatment at its Harbor Light and Adult Rehabilitation Centers.
    • Catholic Charities is another organization with agencies throughout the United States, providing links to individual agencies that provide low-cost, effective treatment for substance use and other issues.
  • Word of mouth. Talking to others that have sought treatment for substance use can provide insight and offer further information about treatment facilities.
  • Community health centers. These centers may provide access to affordable treatment for low-income or underserved individuals and can link people struggling with substance use to appropriate, inexpensive treatment options.
  • Doctors, healthcare providers, or counselors. Speaking to a medical or mental health professional can be invaluable when seeking affordable substance use treatment. Treatment providers may be more familiar with insurance and can provide a referral to treatment that is affordable.
  • Self-help meetings. Social support is important in overcoming an addiction, and self-help meetings can be a wealth of information. Members can share their experience navigating through the rehab system and provide direction to affordable rehab facilities.

What They Offer

Affordable treatment occurs in a variety of settings, based on the needs of each patient. These settings can include:

  • Inpatient treatment, where patients reside at the facility for 30-90 days or more and receive intensive services.2
  • Outpatient treatment, where patients receive counseling services while still residing at home and participating in their usual daily routine.2
  • Detox facilities, where patients are medically supervised around the clock throughout the detoxification process to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Crisis intervention centers, which provide support and stabilization for patients with addiction who are in crisis, such as those who are homeless or live in an unsafe or unstable environment.

Treatment can involve a wide range of services, including:

  • Individual counseling, where a trained therapist or counselor provides one-on-one meetings on a consistent basis to address the causes of addiction and develop relapse prevention skills.2
  • Group counseling, where a therapist or counselor oversees a group of individuals in treatment, who are free to discuss addiction, triggers, coping skills, and other aspects of recovery.2
  • Family counseling, which incorporates family members into treatment, allowing relationships to be repaired and educating the family on how to best support a loved one in recovery.2
  • 12-step meetings, where attendance and participation can complement and facilitate the treatment process.2
  • Housing, which provides a safe, sober, and stable environment to recover in.
  • Medication, which is an important part of treatment that can be used to manage withdrawal symptoms, treat underlying medical or mental health problems, and reduce cravings and the risk of relapse in some cases.2
  • Medical care, which may be an overlooked area during active addiction. When entering treatment, it is important to identify and treat any medical issues, especially those caused or exacerbated by addiction.2

Many low-cost addiction treatment facilities cater to various populations. These can include:

  • Adolescents.
  • People that identify as LGBTQ.
  • People living with HIV or AIDS.
  • Individuals that are hearing impaired or have other disabilities.
  • People addicted to opioids, such as heroin or prescription painkillers.
  • People that are referred from the judicial system, such as those in drug court.
  • People that are dually diagnosed (addiction plus another mental health disorder).
  • People that do not speak English.
  • Veterans.
  • Seniors.
  • Adult men and women – clinics may even be gender-specific.
  • Pregnant women.

Factors to Consider

Treatment of any type can be effective. However, there are some things to think about when choosing an affordable rehab center.

  • Inexpensive drug and alcohol rehabs may have long waiting lists due to their cheaper cost. A long wait for treatment can reduce motivation for recovery, and in some cases, can be the difference between life and death.2
  • Some facilities specialize in certain populations, such as adolescents, certain genders, or those involved in the legal system.
  • An affordable rehab may not offer the full continuum of treatment services and might offer only detox services, inpatient treatment, or outpatient care.
  • In order to provide low-cost treatment, these clinics may have less staff available to each patient. This means that care may be less individualized than in a more expensive treatment facility, and treatment plans may be less tailored to each patient.
  • Low-cost rehabs may not offer as many amenities as standard or luxury rehabs. For example, they may not have fitness equipment, private rooms, or gourmet meals.
  • Affordable centers may not be as well-maintained as a more expensive program, where additional money can be allocated for maintenance and repairs.

Any type of reputable rehab can be effective, regardless of the cost.
Any type of reputable rehab can be effective, regardless of the cost. However, if you can find the resources to pay for a slightly more expensive program that has an immediate opening and a good reputation, it might be better to seek treatment there instead of spending time on a waiting list or going to a place that might not offer as high a quality of care. Immediate and individualized treatment can go a long way in fostering recovery, but the most crucial step is getting into treatment.
